Christmas at Nana's started in 2017 when Bernadette, her husband Bryan, their children, her extended family, and friends decided to make the magic of Christmas and Santa Claus a reality for underprivileged children from the Barrio Hollywood neighborhood and surrounding communities.
She organized a gift-giveaway afternoon at her childhood home on West Saint Claire Street. Bernadette shared the event with the local elementary schools and on social media. On a Sunday in December, with the help of the local fire department, Santa arrived on a hook-and-ladder truck; Santa then met with each child and gave them a toy they truly wanted.
At the first event, approximately 50 children of all ages met with Santa and received a gift. The number of children who visit with Santa grows every year. Last year, 2024, was the biggest event ever Santa gave gifts to just under 400 children. In addition to meeting Santa and getting a gift, the children and their families enjoy hot cocoa, cookies, nachos, and face painting.
